Executive summary

Simmons & Simmons elexica (www.elexica.com) celebrated its tenth anniversary on 22 November 2009.

Launched initially as a free online legal information service and internet service provider (ISP) for the UK legal market, elexica was ground breaking, being the first legal online service of its kind to be provided by a leading international law firm. Launch of the service sent a clear message that Simmons & Simmons was a forward thinking law firm, innovative, technology literate and open to support our clients in new and different ways.

elexica is used primarily as a current awareness and research tool, with registered users having the ability to subscribe to email alerts and updates, as well as search for topical legal content (subject to tiered level access control).

More recently, a number of new service offerings have been introduced on the site including:

  • video based online training
  • video podcasts (which can be downloaded to iPods® and other mobile devices, or subscribed to through the iTunes store®)
  • specialised high value "microsites", especially those that were developed following the global financial crisis
  • subscription services under the "Navigator" brand - with three services now live to clients.

Ten years on, there are over 14,000 registered users on the site. Registrations on elexica have doubled over the last two years. It is now a market leading legal online service and a key differentiator for Simmons & Simmons.

Key facts

elexica (yes, with a small "e") provides:

  • high quality, discipline and sector specific, legal updates and current awareness alerts in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish and Italian
  • expert analysis and commentary on legal and regulatory issues
  • packaged know how products including our Anti Money Laundering, UK Companies Act and UK Budget resources and a range of Regulatory Revolution Trackers
  • video based online training (accredited for CPD in England & Wales)
  • weekly video podcasts on topical issues and latest developments from around the world (which can be downloaded to iPods® and other mobile devices, or subscribed to through the iTunes store®)
  • a range of RSS feeds which enable registered users to be notified of new content on elexica within minutes of it being published.

elexica is a free service, but registration is required. Tiered access control is in place to allow us to provide a portfolio of additional resources to our clients, whilst enabling other users to see the wealth of information available on the site.

elexica's content is provided by lawyers from across Simmons & Simmons' international network of offices, covering a variety of topics, jurisdictions and languages. Each article carries details of the date the article was submitted and the date of its most recent review, so that our users can take a view on whether to check for more recent developments.

Achievements

Over the past decade, elexica has evolved as the vehicle for sharing our knowhow with clients and contacts, accumulating a number of awards on the way:

At the start of 2008 over 7,000 users were registered on elexica. As of November 2009, the service has exceeded 14,000 registered users. This represents a 100 per cent increase in registered users over a two year period.

Clients have responded positively to the introduction of Simmons & Simmons navigator, video delivery of our CPD training events and new microsites that provide information on the global financial crisis, especially those on short selling and the failure of the Lehman Brothers group.

Looking ahead

Knowhow has become fundamental to the way that Simmons & Simmons supports its client relationships and the way the firm markets its services and differentiates itself to clients. elexica is our platform for delivering high value, focussed knowhow to clients and a primary entry point to the range of value added services offered by the firm.

During 2010, major redevelopment of the site will take place, introducing a number of new features to improve the user experience and to make content even more accessible.

The firm has achieved a tremendous amount with elexica over the last ten years and will continue that tradition in the years ahead.
